Welcome back everyone! I caught up with SitePoint lead designer Alex Walker and master of the “Cicada Principle” to have a chat about limitations and banalities of CSS3 gradients and where SVG backgrounds could suitably replace them. Download this Episode You can download this episode as a standalone MP3 file: Design Festival Podcast #13: David Airey on Freelancing (MP3, 01:03:44, 62.3 MB) You can subscribe to the Design Festival Podcast either directly or via iTunes — add the Design Festival Podcast to iTunes . Episode Summary Presenters Simon Pascal Klein ( @klepas ) Alex Walker ( @alexmwalker ) Content Rundown Intro: Graphically, CSS3 is awesome — rounded corners, shadows, transformations, … However CSS3 gradients are a bit unwieldy — rudimentary linear or radial gradients, bothersome syntax, varying support across the browsers, … Alternative? Maybe use SVGs

For most web freelancers, it’s not uncommon for the phone to ring with that fateful question, “Hey, can you guys build me a new company logo?” And for most of us, we answer yes, hang up and then start to think, where do I start? In this article, I hope to share some “not so common” logo presentation secrets and making any logo development project a big success! Here are just a few basic techniques that worked for me: Understand Your Logo Development Target Market

In recent years, a web design trend has emerged in which designers create web pages that resemble the layout of print posters. If you printed out a copy of the entire length of the web page, the printed version would look like it belonged on a wall. Some common elements in these poster-like web designs include long, eye-catching graphics that often stretch the entire length of the page and very readable text blocks that are located in order of importance down the page. Just like posters, these web pages include the most important information first, with additional less attention-grabbing information near the bottom

I first heard of Sinatra a couple of years ago and have been in love with it ever since. For those who haven’t heard of it, Sinatra is a DSL that is used to create web applications. It is written in Ruby and was originally designed by Blake Mizerany, but there’s now a core team who maintain and develop the code. In case you were wondering, it is named after Frank Sinatra, apparently for having so much class he deserves a web-framework named after him.
